One of our wine market touchstones here in Calgary are the Costco Liquor stores due to their immediate proximity to the main retail warehouses and the fact that their prices on wine, beer and spirits are unbeatable anywhere else in the market. Usually, venturing into Costco Liquor is an expensive proposition considering they have for example, Caymus Special Select for under $100. While browsing through their selection of 2009 Bordeaux, I decided to roll the dice on a value bubble in the form of this non vintage 11% ABV Luna Argenta Prosecco Brut DOC from Treviso Italy.
Out of the bottle, this wine exhibited a pale greenish yellow hue with lots of quick dissolving bubbles. The nose was slightly floral and soapy with secondary notes of pear and white stone fruit. In the mouth, not a ton of complexity with pear and honey being the primary flavor sensations moving quickly to a slightly sweet, yet bitter finish. This is a dry wine without question and it carries itself with decent acidity. Not a bad example but not one that will change your world, rather just make it a little more boozy.
Conclusion: Sometimes you just want an cold flute of Prosecco without having to think about things too much and this wine would be the perfect candidate to fill your glass. Yes, it is simple and straightforward but has decent versatility as a palate cleanser or aperitif and could be leveraged as a ingredient for sparkling wine cocktails. It offers decent value that is ready to drink now and would not be a cellar candidate.
